A subpanel of the House Energy and Commerce Committee has decided to conduct a hearing on online gambling. The key theme of the hearing will be the legalization of online gambling. A bill was introduced by Rep. Joe Barton for legalizing gambling in the States after the government indicted the founders of a few top-notch online gambling platforms. Joe Barton appreciated the efforts taken by Chairman Bono-Mack to hold a hearing on internet gambling.
Barton stated that the hearing will be among the first steps taken by the industry to disclose the fact that the law structure with which the US government operates is not beneficial for a large section of the society, including, the public, banking industry and tax payers. The law also doesn't do justice to those who want to play popular games like online roulette in an honest and transparent environment on the internet.
Rep. Barney Frank Criticizes Administration's Decision to Shut Down Some Gambling Sites
The US administration which targeted certain gambling sites during the first half of the year, has been severely criticized by Rep. Barney Frank, a proponent for online gambling. He stated that it hasn't been a wise action on the part of the government to accuse one of the prominent gambling sites as 'massive Ponzi scheme'.
As the chairperson in the last Congress, Frank had formulated a bill in favor of legalizing online gambling via the House Financial Services Committee. The bill was reintroduced by him during the first half of this year with Rep. John Campbell.
Spencer Bachus Opposes Online Gambling's Legalization
Spencer Bachus, the chairperson of Financial Services condemns online gambling. The staunch opponent of the legalizing of online gambling supported its ban in 2025. As reported by his office earlier this year, he does not have plans of reconsidering the issue. Hence, the Energy and Commerce Committee is undoubtedly a better place to gather support for online gambling.
The Allowances of Barton's Bill
Barton suggested that the bill introduced by him will enable licensed gambling sites to accept bets from players. Once the bill is passed, these gambling sites, including card rooms, race tracks and casinos, will be allowed to set up poker rooms as well. Hence, the corporations currently controlling the gambling industry of the United States will also get to extend their dominance to the online sphere now.
Barton's Bill Drawing Support from Lawmakers and Players
Lawmakers and Poker Players Alliance (an organization consisting of about 1.2 million players), have extended support towards Barton's bill. Top professionals of the industry have also spoken in its favor. However, Eric Cantor, House Majority Leader, voiced strong objections against the legalization of online gambling.
Other Supporters of Online Gambling
FairPlayUSA Coalition came to be funded by two leading gambling firms, MGM and Caesar’s in March 2025. The key aim of the group is to advocate the issue of online gambling being legalized. FairPlayUSA Coalition will not attempt to sway the lawmakers.
